What is a Riot ID?
Before Valorant’s release earlier this year, Riot Games already had League of Legends, a well-known 5v5 MOBA PC game. In LoL, players have Summoner Names to identify themselves.
A new game mode, Teamfight Tactics, was added to LoL in June 2019 and was later released on Android and iOs on March 19, 2020. Accompanying the release was the announcement that the company would be launching several new games that they revealed as Project A (Valorant), Project L (Fighting Game), and Project F (RPG). With this said, Riot Games decided to limit players to a single account that they named Riot ID, which will be used for all these games.
Riot IDs are composed of a unique username followed by a tag with letters or numbers, which you need to log in and play games created by Riot Games. If you upgraded your League account or created your Riot ID during the release of Teamfight Tactics on mobile, the tag following your username will have shown the region that your account was associated with. For example, #JP1 (Japan), #NA (North America), #EUW, and so on.
However, when Valorant was released, Riot decided to remove the region selector when logging into Riot accounts to enable long-term support capabilities for multiple games. Riot accounts created after this change have a tag that includes 4 randomized numbers or letters. These accounts are now what they refer to as «regionless» accounts.
